Atlantic Puffins on Machias Seal Island, Maine : My trip to Machias Seal Island in Maine on June 4 was the most incredible experience I’ve had as a birder and a photographer. For 90 minutes, I stood in a wooden blind, surrounded by hundreds, if not thousands of Atlantic Puffins and Razorbill Auks. They were like “sitting ducks” or “sitting puffins” for my lens, an opportunity of a lifetime. The challenges of shooting these creatures were a) getting over my sense of awe and “focusing” on the task at hand b) trying to isolate one individual, dyads, or triads against a solid background of rock, sky or sea c) leaving the wooden box when the tour leader said it was time to depart and the island give the birds a break from their “people watching”. If anyone is either a birder, photographer of any level, or none of the above, I can’t think of a better way to spend the sum of $100.00 for this tour. There are two boat operators in Maine with landing permits for this island, Norton Tours out of Jonesport, and the one I took, Bold Coast Tours http://www.boldcoast.com/ out of Cutler Harbor. Andy Patterson provided superb leadership as a skilled naturalist and boat pilot. The tour didn’t end upon leaving Machias Seal Island. On the way back to Cutler, we circled other islands to get closer to several species of seals that live on the rocks. By then some of the famous Maine fog set in, giving us photographers a break, and providing a fitting end to a great excursion.
